A Motor Mechanic is a skilled technician who services, diagnoses and resolves technical concerns with light passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The work includes:
Carrying out the routine service procedures as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
Examining and preparing the vehicle for the National Car Test (NCT) or the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT).
Diagnosing and resolving problems with the operation of the mechanical and electrical systems of vehicles.
How do I become a Motor Mechanic in Ireland? To become a Motor Mechanic in Ireland you will need to undertake a four-year apprenticeship with an employer who is formally approved by SOLAS and undertake off the job training with SOLAS throughout the four years. When you complete your apprenticeship, you will receive a QQI Level 6 Qualification known as an Advanced Certificate Craft – Motor Mechanics.
What do I learn as an Apprentice?
During your training you will learn how to:
Carry out all vehicle service, maintenance and repair procedures.
Diagnose faults; dismantle and reassemble the engine and its components.
Carry out a complete engine overhaul.
Use specialised equipment to check the operation of the lighting, steering, braking and other systems.
Measure exhaust emissions, record the results and liaise with the customer.
Replace various parts including timing belts and chains; clutch components; brake components; and steering and suspension components.
Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical systems.
Test electrical and electronic systems and components.
How Long is the apprenticeship? This apprenticeship is a 4-year programme consisting of 7 phases. 4 on-the-job and 3 off-the-job in a training facility.
