Introducing the Range Rover Velar
Range Rover is a brand that is widely recognised for being synonymous with luxury and elegance. However, more than just a pretty face, Range Rover vehicles have always had plenty of substance, which comes in the form of powerful engines and class-leading off-roading technology.
Having been designed to sit between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, the Velar offers a unique blend of glamour and all-terrain credentials. A visually reductive approach has been pursued during the creation of Velar, with features such as the all-LED lights and deployable flush door handles making for a truly compelling appearance.
Here is everything you need to know about Velar: the avant-garde Range Rover.
Based on the sleek silhouette that Range Rover have implemented, you would be forgiven for thinking the Velar is form over function. You would also be incorrect. Inside is typical of a luxury Range Rover, with plush materials occupying every surface. It is easy to find the ideal driving position because of the highly adjustable front seats.
Head room is very good throughout the cabin, as is rear passenger space. Fitting a child's seat is straight forward because of the easily accessible Isofix anchor points.
Head to the boot and you will find a huge amount of cargo space behind the power tailgate. In fact, there is 748 litres of space with the rear seats in their normal position, which grows to 1,811 litres with them folded flat.
The Range Rover Velar is well-equipped throughout the range and boasts a number of desirable features as standard. Every model includes rain sensing wipers, automatic headlights, and two-zone climate control.
The Pivi infotainment system features a 10-inch touchscreen and offers features such as DAB digital radio, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®. Upgrade to Pivi Pro and you will be presented with the latest in-car artificial intelligence including the self-learning navigation system. Connectivity is enhanced even further thanks to Amazon Alexa voice-control.
Driver assistance features include Lane Keep Assist, 3D Surround Camera, Front and Rear Parking Aid, Cruise Control and Speed Limiter, Driver Condition Monitor, and Emergency Braking.
Range Rover Velar is available with either a diesel, with mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) technology, petrol, or a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Each is accompanied by an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard, which has been engineered to optimise fuel efficiency and power delivery.
The 201bhp diesel utilises a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and returns up to 44.9mpg (WLTP Combined cycle). For those who want more power, there is the 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged D300 engine, which delivers 296bhp and you can expect a fuel economy of up to 38.2mpg. The intelligent 48V MHEV system harvests the energy which would usually be lost during deceleration and then redeploys it to assist the engine with acceleration; ultimately reducing fuel consumption.
Exceptional efficiency and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions can be experienced if you opt for the Velar Plug-In Hybrid, badged P400e. Combining a petrol engine with an eMotor, the P400e delivers a total power output of 398bhp and can travel up to 53km in fully electric mode.
Meanwhile, there are two petrol engine to choose from with the higher performing 395bhp engine reaching 100km/h from zero in just 5.2 seconds.
Luxury SUVs do not get much better than the Velar. The silhouette created by Range Rover has to be one of the prettiest currently available, while the interior materials and technologies will never cease to amaze.
In addition, the advanced off roading capability places the Velar in a class of its own, while the efficient range of engines offer a unique blend of efficiency and driving enjoyment.
